Ian Clayton Gallagher
Is the third oldest child in the family, appearing in over 96 of the 97 episodes. He was portrayed as very masculine and is pursuing a career in the military. It comes at a surprise when the audience learns that he is homosexual and has a sexual relationship with his boss. His brother Lip confronts him about the relationship, he accepts Ian for who he is and tells him to not hold secrets from him. During season 4 of the series Ian is diagnosed bipolar and hospitalized. He soon drops out of high school and joins the army, then leaves the army and is now a wanted man. Ian attempts same sex in the most recent season a very awkward scene in which he ends up hating it. Throughout the series his family and friends become very accepting of his homosexuality and he gets a ‘boyfriend’. In the newest season of Shameless a trans character named Trevor is introduced, Ian is at first transphobic but as their relationship grows they agree to have sex. “But there’s a barrier: they’re both tops. Some honest, awkward conversations lead them to a compromise in which they both agree to experiment with bottoming. They shop for dildos, establish a safe word for the experience, and flip a coin to decide that Ian goes first,” (http://www.refinery29.com/2016/11/129877/shameless-characters-queer-lgbtq-sex-scenes-season-7). This season filled the void in portrayals of queer and trans people, something not seen in any television series.

Shameless: Season 1 Episode 1, 2
Ian Gallagher is one of the main character in the series, his character starts out the series as very masculine with a dream of joining the military and attending West Point Military Academy.
But unknown to the rest of his family Ian is currently in the closet and battling the challenges that come with it, afraid of what his family and society will think of him as gay. According to the Human Rights Campaign site 26% of the LGBT youth say their biggest fears are to not be accepted by their families, trouble at school and a fear of being out and open. While nearly the same percent of the non-LGBT youth say their biggest problems are trouble with classes, grades, and exams (https://www.hrc.org/youth-report/view-and-share-statistics).
His older brother Lip Gallagher is the first to question his sexuality when he finds a gay porn magazines hidden in Ians side of the room. He confirms the allegations when he catches Ian having sex with the married male store owners that Ian works for. He ask Ian to have sex with a girl, one of their neighbors, thinking this will fix his sexuality. Ian agrees but never get an erection when with the girls and leaves the house running. Mad at first Lip accepts it by the end of the episode and ask Ian to not hold any secrets.
With Lips support Ian slowly comes out of the closet and accepts his homosexuality. Not every situation ends this good but through the support of family and friends it is made easier for the LGBT community to come out and not fear their sexuality.
